First Friday History
When I began doing my research to determine if a GLBT center was needed in this area, I spoke to a lot of people. The one question I kept hearing over and over was "Where do you meet people?" GLBT individuals, gay and lesbian couples and GLBT families are scattered throughout the Upper Delaware region, but all too often feel very isolated not knowing how to connect with others in our community. Gay parents looking for others who are raising children in rural, conservative areas; single individuals looking to meet someone; couples looking for fellowship; people wanting to expand their circle of friends, they all asked the same question "Where do you meet people?" Of course folks can meet at any of our events, but there needed to be something and someplace more consistent.
Since we do not have the money to open a Center (although that is still a long term goal) we started to think out of the box. What if one place allowed us to meet at their venue on a regular basis? What if they said we could bring in our own entertainment? What if that place said we can advertise it as a GLBT night? And what if they said they would welcome us as a community and as individuals? It seemed like too much to hope for, but fortunately there are people like Nancy and Darin, owners of The Water Wheel Cafe, Bakery & Bar. They loved the idea and welcomed us to their wonderful venue.
On April 2, 2010 we hosted our first First Friday...GLBT Style! at the Water Wheel Cafe. Regina Sayles rocked the house. She was amazing and everyone who packed into the place loved her!!! New friends were made a new community took form. We look forward to many more First Fridays filled with great music, wonderful food and good friends. It feels good when folks in our community ask "Where do you meet people?" to be able to finally given them a answer. See you at the Water Wheel for First Friday...GLBT Style!"
